Hi all from Lawrenceville, First time post. I've been growing Kiwi (the fuzzy variety) for the first time. I've got one male and two females. Been in the ground for four years now. Last year they bloomed but the late freeze took them all. This year is better. I've got probably a five gallon pail worth of fruit that look great. My problem is, when can I expect the fruit to fully ripen? I'm worried that we'll have a hard freeze before a full term harvest. Will a freeze destroy the fruit? Can I pick them now with hope they will ripen off the vine? Currently they are full size, the seeds are black, the fruit is still very firm and quite sour. I haven't been able to get much info off the internet on these questions. Also, I'm preparing to move and plan on cutting them back for propagation and to take them with me. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance. Eric

Eric, I suggest you call the Gwinnett County Cooperative Extension Office and ask for the Master Gardener on duty. They have a great amount of reference materials there and will be able to answer your questions about kiwi. The telephone number is 678-377-4030. Thank you for visiting or web site.

I have been growing kiwi (heyward) for the past 5 years and my info did come off the internet. Pick kiwi before a heavy frost. Yes, I know...they stay on the vine FOREVER. I pick mine the first to last of November. Leave them at room temp and they will begin to ripen. Putting an apple(releases ethylene gas) in with them will hasten ripening. To delay ripening, keep refrigerated. I had a wheelbarrow full off 1 female last year. I was eating fruit until the end of February. MG in Farminton, GA
