Hi, I have a pear tree that is 12 years old, and was hit by a storm. A large branch was broken off this past fall, and the tree is now lopsided, but still very much alive, and as tall as a 2 story house. The side that is full is actually touching the roof on the house. Does anyone know if we prune the top of this tree on the otherside that does not have a branch broken, what will happen to the tree? Is it a waste of time? I really don't want to take it down, as there is limited space between my house and our neighbor's house, and we like it as a buffer. Without it, I don't know what to plant instead.

I suspect your pear tree is a Bradford. To correctly answer your question, I need to know if your tree bears fruit. Bradford pears are beauties when in bloom, but have a bad habit of self-destructing when mature due to their branching habits. Most arborists do not recommend topping trees. Your tree may stand some prunning, however, I would consult a certified arborist before proceeding. Especially since you like the tree and want it to prosper. G
